Jáchymov

Jáchymov is located at the foot of the Ore Mountains near the border with Saxony. This originally mining town quickly grew after its founding into the largest town of the kingdom. In 1533, 18 thousand inhabitants lived here. First, silver was mined and Thalers were minted, later Jáchymov became famous for the isolation of radium from pitchblende. Jáchymov and the whole world owe this discovery to the Curies. Today, Jáchymov is a spa town using mineral and radioactive springs primarily for treating diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Jáchymov arose thanks to rich silver deposits in its surroundings. In 1516, it was founded by Count Šlik.
