Jáchymov
Jáchymov is located in the foothills of the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory) near the border with Germany (about 20 km from Karlovy Vary and 7 km from the border crossing of Boží Dar - Oberwiesenthal). This originally mining town grew into the biggest town in the Czech kingdom soon after its establishment. 18 thousand people lived here in 1533. Originally, silver was mined and the "tolar" coins minted here, and later Jáchymov became famous due to the isolation of radium from pitchblende (uraninite). Jáchymov and the whole world can be grateful to the Curies for this discovery. Today it is a spa town utilizing mineral and radioactive springs for treatment mostly of the motion apparatus problems.
